BAGO MAZE – it’s A…MAZE..ING!

We recently met up with our relatives Marg & Neville at Bonny Hills Caravan Park for a week’s holiday before we begin our next lap of Australia. Whilst there we decided on an early start to visit the Bago Maze & Winery. We left early as it was predicted to be very hot day and so with hats, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen we set off for the 30 minute drive.

If you travel the Pacific Highway (A1) heading north, about 7klm from Kew NSW you will come to an exit that says Bago Rd, Herons Creek. Take that exit and follow the signs.

The winery and maze is about 9klms from there and you will drive through a towering forest of eucalypts, then the road opens out to a rolling countryside with acres of grape vines.

Have you heard of the Mobbs family?  Well, they are the family who own the vineyard and developed the maze.

It was in about 2005 that Farmer Mobbs was sitting on top of the hill finishing off a bottle (or two perhaps), when he thought that building a maze would be a fabulous idea.

Construction of the maze began on Christmas Day 2006 and Mr Mobbs thought it would only take a day as it’s not busy then…. well to Mr Mobbs surprise it didn’t get finished that day.

It actually took 6 years and on 2nd December 2012 the maze was opened to the public. Can you imagine the work that would have had to happen? I bet there were millions of weeds to be pulled, lots of trimming and mowing and watering to be done, and cuts, bruises, flies and insect bites etc.  It is a real credit to the masterminded Mobbs family.

They have themed the maze along a Magical Forest where adventure and wonder can be found. They provide you with a map of the maze so you can uncover the hidden world of fairies and gnomes. There was lots fun and laughter as we traversed the dead end mazes then having to turn around and find another path all whilst seeking the gnomes like Ian the Gardening Gnome and Lilly the Lake Fairy.

We were too early to have a wine tasting, but the variety was endless. The Baba Lila Handmade Chocolate Shop also had a large variety of chocolates to choose from and being able to sit and have a quiet coffee and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, made our trip to Bago Maze & Wine a trip to remember.
