Dr. Morse’s Indian Root Pills ‘became’ one of the most successful and enduring products to be manufactured and marketed in North America as part of the lucrative patent medicine industry, which thrived during most of the 19th and 20th centuries. Its manufacturer claimed the pills contained herbal ingredients that would help “cleanse the blood,” as “impurity of the blood” was believed to be the cause of all disease. WIKIPEDIA

The image of Dr Morse Indian Root Pills on the Barn above is symbolic of Maitland NSW. In fact I lived 7 houses up from this icon for more than 10 years. People wanting to know my address were given the script – ” Turn left or right ( depending on whether they were coming from north or south) at Melbourne Street Lights, go straight through the next set of traffic lights – the brightly painted green Hunter River Hotel will be on your right and you will go under the railway bridge with the Historic Maitland Gaol on you right. Go through the roundabout following the road to Morpeth and just around the bend you will see the blue barn with ‘Indian Root Pills’ written on the side… we live 7 houses from the barn on the same side as the barn”

A key attraction of Maitland and the Hunter Valley NSW Australia, Maitland Gaol has a vibrant history spanning more than 150 years. After housing some of Australia’s most hardened and notorious criminals, Maitland Gaol closed as a Correctional Institution in 1998.
The cell doors have now been swung open, and visitors are invited to ‘serve time’ learning about the facility, past prisoners and the daring escapes
